Muggula Poti - Rules & Judging Criteria

General Information

  • Registration Fee: $25 per team.

  • Registration Deadline: January 20th, 2026

  • Event Date: January 24th, 2026

    • Location: Indian Heritage & Cultural Center (IHCC) 33915 155th Ln, Madrid, IA

    • Timings: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

  • Team Size: 1 to 4 members per team

  • Categories:

    • Adults - 18+ ages

    • Children - 10-17 ages

  • Check-In: Participants must arrive at the venue at least 30 minutes before the competition starts.

 

Contest Rules

A designated area for each team will be set up by the D.A.T.A. team and a floor covering will be used to abide by the venue rules and restrictions. 

Rangoli Creation Guidelines

  • Allowed Patterns: Chukkala muggu or freehand design.

  • Rangoli Size: Each team will be allotted a 4ft x 4ft area. Rangoli must not exceed the allotted space.

  • Materials: 

    • Participants must bring their own materials. Only white muggu powder, Rangoli colors, and colored sand are permitted.

    • Stencils, mechanical tools, pre-drawn outlines, or any other aids are strictly prohibited.

    • No additional decorative items or accessories are allowed. 

  • Time Limit: Teams will have two hours to complete their Rangoli.

  • Clean-Up Responsibility: Teams must ensure their area is clean after the competition.​

  • Important Age Requirements:

    • Children/Teen Category: Strictly reserved for participants aged 10 to 17.

    • The "One-Adult" Rule: If any member of your team is 18 or older at the time of registration, the entire team must register under the Adult Category.

Design Restrictions

  • To maintain the spirit of traditional Muggulu, the following themes are NOT permitted:

    • No text is allowed 

 

Judging Criteria

A panel of experienced judges will evaluate each Rangoli based on the following criteria:

  1. Overall Appearance – Neatness, symmetry, and visual appeal.

  2. Design & Creativity – Originality and uniqueness of the design. Alignment with allowed designs/patterns.

  3. Details & Clarity – Precision and intricacy of patterns.

  4. Color Combination – Harmonious use of colors.

  5. People's Choice Award - Audience will get a chance to vote for ONE rangoli of their choice

 

Contest Results

  • The results and winners will be announced after the contest concludes.

  • Awards will be given immediately after the judgement concludes

  • The decision of the judges will be final and binding. No disputes or appeals will be entertained.

 

All participants are encouraged to adhere to the rules and bring their creativity to life through their Rangoli designs.  Please review these guidelines thoroughly and share any feedback to ensure a fair and enjoyable competition for everyone. Any violation of guidelines may result in disqualification. We look forward to an exciting and vibrant competition.
